The interactive map here shows the locations
of more than 350 Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum),
and the relatively few giant Coast Redwoods (Sequoia
sempervirens), that have been planted over many years and are
growing around Victoria, British Columbia. There are certainly
additional trees that we have not found (including a number on
golf courses), and we may have mistakenly identified a few.
The scissors symbols on the map indicate trees that appear to
have been cut down relatively recently. We welcome any
additions or corrections in the comments, and will adjust the
map accordingly. The map shows our count of trees as of spring
2023.
There are many interesting tree species growing around
Victoria, native and non-native, so why focus on the Sequoias?
That question might not be as simple as it first appears.
Obviously, these species are considered iconic trees and
attract many viewers in their native California ranges. They
can get really big and tall. They are also beautiful
trees...but aren't all trees beautiful? The Sequoias in
Victoria are quite far from their natural range and can
certainly stand out, but on the other hand, many passersby
don't seem to notice them. Perhaps the presence of Victoria
area Redwoods creates an opportunity to ask further questions
about trees, cities, the nature of human values, and so on.
(That might sound like a lot, but you have to work with what
you've got.)
We'd like to thank Greg Koep for his initial attempts to count
the Giant Sequoias in Victoria. It was his
blog
that sparked our own curiosity.
